THE FANATIC'S GUIDE TO
"Grow Mon Grow"
English Version Written by Steve Blum
Guest Starring: Mihiramon
- Okay, I realise that the crowd are all staring up into
the sky, but seriously, I think at least one or two of
them would notice the pair of little monsters that are
chasing each other through the streets. Then again,
though, idiocy and blindness seem to be common traits
with the general public and the police force in the
Tamers world.
- None of the silhouettes that fly through the air and
disappear into the Juggernaut vortex are recognisable
Digimon, they're just generic monster outlines.
- The footage of the Digimon disappearing into
the vortex after Riley and Tally's scene is looped from
beforehand.
- When Guilmon's eyes "go crazy," as I
affectionately term it - when they turn to slits, that is
- they glow (see screenshot). They've never done that
before.
- Just before the Juggernaut vortex erupts with blue
energy, the footage of Digimon disappearing into it is
the same piece from before, looped for the second time.
- Just before the first commercial break, when we see a
wide view of the city... uhm... where are the Hypnos
towers? I suppose they could just be out of shot, but
also, where is the rip in the sky that has just appeared?
- Mihiramon's dialogue makes it seem as though the Devas
are solely out to conquer Earth. As we'll later see,
that's not true. They do consider themselves vastly
superior to humans, though, and think they should be
their masters, but this wasn't their actual mission.
- When Yamaki stands up just before he says, "I can't
let you do this!" his palmtop device is gone, and
doesn't reappear. Maybe he just dropped it...
- When Renamon leaps over Takato and Guilmon, she's
rendered in silhouette form. At normal speed this looks
fine, but when you slow-mo it down, you see that her body
is unusually long, and her tail is tapered and
reptilian-like, not it's usual bushy self.
- Takato
throws Rika a Digivolution Modify Card, and it smoothly
sails the several yards that separate them (check out the
screenshot to see just how far this is). Have you ever
tried throwing a playing card? It's damn near impossible
to get it to go that far, never mind that straight! I've
always wondered how Gambit could do it so easily...
- It's not particularly clear, but Kyubimon's feet and tail
tips once again appear to be unmoving. By the way, I
realise that we're now 3-1 on the whole "fire not
moving vs. fire moving" thing - but they ARE
supposed to move, just look at the theme music to see
them flickering away (there's also her Digivolution
sequence, but they're also glowing like fire there, and
they never do that otherwise, except when she's using Fox
Tail Inferno). Also, when Kyubmion is distorting before
she De-Digivolves, you can see a fleck of the fire on one
of her rear feet existing indepedantly from the rest of
her.
- I'd question how Gargomon could run out of ammo when his
guns are a part of his body. It's the same principal as
someone's fingers just spontaneously ceasing to work.
- For some reason, Takato's Digi-Modify sequence is cut
short, and he doesn't say "Digivolution
activate!" Also, immediately after Growlmon
Digivolves, he has Hyper Wings, when we never saw Takato
slash the card. Although when Takato says, "It's all
up to Growlmon..." you can see a Hyper Wing card in
his hand.
- Terriermon doesn't just make a generic cartoon
"bzz-bzz" whispering noise - listen close and
you'll actually hear him say, "He always circles
around before he attacks." Nice attention to detail,
there.
- It sure took Kazu and Kenta a long while to notice that
rip in the sky and massive column of blue energy, huh?
- Here's a thing - throughout this episode, Jeri is holding
an envelope, just like the one I mentioned Henry was
holding at the end of the previous
episode. What are these, lunch bags?
- So, did Impmon just give up chasing Calumon, or what?
- When the Tamers look
up at the helicopters as they shoot at Mihiramon,
Terriermon's ear is down to Henry's knee. When the angle
changes, beginning with Rika's line, "Even Growlmon
crumpled," his ear is now only down to the middle of
Henry's thigh. Then, after Growlmon's evolution, when
Henry says, "Our little boy's grow up!"
Terriermon's ear is now only down to his waist,
definitely looking way too short. Check out the
screenshots on your right for comparisons.
- After Takato slashes the Blue Card, Calumon squeaks,
"Crystal Matrix activate!" Well, that's just
all kinds of messed up, because Calumon isn't supposed to
know that he has the power of Digivolution yet. In the
Japanese version, he simply screamed
"Culuuuuu!" - while Calumon doesn't make that
noise (or even a proper equivalent) in the dub, he really
should've just done his little squeal, like he did back
when his powers activated for Growlmon's Digivolution in "A Question of Trust."
- The "take the tiger by the tail" pun is really
just too, too perfect, isn't it? :) While it sounds like
a good example of a dub line, it fits SO well into the
context of the episode that it gives you pause to
wonder...
- Joel Gordon
points out that Kazu and Kenta are able to identify
WarGrowlmon by name, as if such a thing were common
knowledge - but because Guilmon and his forms are a
product of Takato's imagination, and not actually 'real'
Digimon (as evidenced by the fact the D-Power could
produce no information on Guilmon in "To
Fight or Not to Fight"), then they shouldn't
really know this. On the other hand, though, I imagine
it's possible they could have heard WarGrowlmon call out
his name during his Digivolution.
